SXSW Part 5: Sunday

Saturday night had lasted well into Sunday morning, so when nine bells rang and woke us up, we were a bit bleary-eyed and hung over. But nothing cures a hang over like feasting on Mexican food, so another round of Curra’s Grill was ordered, devoured, and it’s medicinal qualities absorbed. Thank you Jorge! Curra’s Grill is always a good idea. We two shows that Sunday, both of them short 45 minute sets. The first show was that afternoon... Read More

SXSW Part 4: Saturday

Some sweet graffiti in downtown Austin.   Saturday. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I have to say, it was another beautiful day. The gods of SXSW were smiling on all of us and granted an entire week of sunny, gorgeous days and dry, warm nights. We slept in on Saturday like we did most days that week, since nothing began until noon at the earliest, especially in a festival town full of musicians. We had one show that afternoon, back... Read More

SXSW Part 3: Friday

Curra’s Grill is an excellent choice if you’re ever in Austin, TX looking for some fantastic Mexican food. The self-proclaimed (and appropriately so) “Mother of all Mex” serves heaping plates of food for a reasonable price all day long; and breakfast too. They have blue corn tortilla shells that, one of the chefs explained to Bobby and I, are made from actual blue corn from Mexico, instead of the imitation stuff you find... Read More

SXSW 2013 Part 1

We are so lucky. This year’s trip to South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, TX was successful, insanely busy, and so much fun. We got the ultimate SXSW crash pad with two fabulous people named Walter and Catherine. Fiona; Walter & Catherine’s pretty puppy Walter found our request on Couchsurfing and invited us to stay with them just as I was beginning to panic about where we would possibly find a safe, comfortable place to keep ourselves... Read More

Mango Tree

3/7/12 2:31pm 522.4 miles We stopped at the store to pick up a few snacks for the road, and while filling our shopping basket, got the brilliant idea to swing through the automotive section and grab a couple air-fresheners to keep the car smelling like…not hummus and dill pickle chips. Car fresheners are tricky business; the scent you choose will pervade the car and linger for days if not weeks, and rightly so, since that’s what they’re... Read More

January Tour Part 3: 14 hours in Amarillo

Here is the final entry of our January tour through Tennessee, Louisiana and Texas. Hope you enjoy! We spent a total of about 14 hours in Amarillo, TX, but we had so much fun it felt like 5. We had a great time meeting our Couchsurfing host, playing at The 806, and scarfing down more of our favorite southwestern cuisine–TACOS! We drove into town around 7:30pm on Wednesday night, and went straight to our venue–our favorite Amarillo coffee bar–The... Read More

January Part 2

Below is the 2nd of 3 posts about our time on the road in January. Enjoy! It’ s sunny and 79, and we’re heading north to Dallas on I-35. It’s January, one of the most miserable months of the year if you live in the Midwest, and since that’s where I grew up, I’m conditioned to abhor January and it’s weather. But last night in Austin, it felt like a warm and humid July evening, and it was wonderful. We spent two... Read More

SXSW Tour

The sign says, Dallas: 252 miles.  We’re leaving Amarillo and The 806 behind us for now.   Outside my passenger window the scenery has been mostly vast open Texas plains, at times stretching out like an ocean into the horizon.  The islands of civilization we occasionally come upon have no shortage of coffee, ice tea, or friendly smiles, making our trip down 30 south a  one.   Yesterday was day one of our ten day tour through Texas... Read More
